A Travers les Hauts de France returns to the calendar in 2025 after the 2024 edition was cancelled, with organisers unable to secure enough police support during the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Still a relatively new race in the women’s peloton, it builds on a long local tradition, having originally been run as a men’s event between 1912 and 1959 and then again from 2010 to 2021 before switching over to the women’s calendar.
The race has quickly developed a reputation for unpredictable finishes. Mischa Bredewold won the inaugural women’s edition in 2022 from a small group ahead of Marie-Morgane Le Deunff and Yuliia Biriukova. In 2023, Cofidis dominated on home roads. After a long break by Febe Jooris and Sara van de Vel animated the day, the French team set up the finale perfectly. National champion Victoire Berteau led into the final kilometre, and Valentine Fortin converted the effort with a well-timed sprint. She outsprinted Christine Majerus, riding for Luxembourg, and Marthe Truyen, while celebrating her third win of the season.
This year’s route once again weaves through the Pas-de-Calais region, with three key climbs placed to shape the racing. The Côte du Boise de Buire (1 km at 5.5%) comes just 13 km in, the Côte du Bois d’Havrincourt (800 m at 6%) appears around halfway at 51 km, and the Côte de Monchy-le-Preux (1.3 km at 3%) crests after 98 km. None are overly selective on their own, but repeated efforts could soften legs before the run to Quéant. History suggests the outcome will be a sprint of some form, whether from a small escape or a larger but reduced peloton, depending on which teams are prepared to animate the race.
