Bretagne Ladies Tour 2026 stage 1: Sandrine Tas takes breakthrough sprint win in Plouay

Sandrine Tas 2026 Bretagne Ladies Tour Stage 1

Sandrine Tas claimed the first professional road victory of her cycling career on stage 1 of the 2026 Bretagne Ladies Tour, sprinting to victory in Plouay after 120.6 kilometres from Ploemeur. The Lotto Intermarché Ladies rider beat Amalie Dideriksen and Hélène Hesters in the final sprint, taking both the stage win and the first leader’s jersey of the race.

It was a significant result for Tas, whose sporting route into professional cycling has been anything but conventional. Best known as an elite skater before her switch to the road, the Belgian has adapted quickly to the demands of the peloton and converted that speed into a major result on the opening day in Brittany.

The stage looked well-suited to a reduced sprint. The route into Plouay was not mountainous, but this part of Brittany rarely offers a completely straightforward day. Rolling roads, positioning battles and the pressure of an opening stage all helped make the finale more complicated than a flat-profile sprint might suggest.

Tas beats Dideriksen in the sprint

The final sprint brought together a mix of established road pedigree and emerging momentum. Dideriksen, a former world champion and one of the most experienced finishers in the field, gave Cofidis a strong second place, but Tas had the sharper final acceleration.

Hesters completed the podium for Liv AlUla Jayco Women’s Continental Team, also finishing on the same time as the winner. Elisabeth Ebras took fourth for Lotto Intermarché Ladies, while Linda Riedmann was fifth, giving Lotto Intermarché Ladies three riders in the top five on a highly productive opening day.

That depth mattered. Lotto Intermarché Ladies not only had the stage winner, but also clear presence in the final selection, with Ebras, Riedmann and Annelies Nijssen all finishing inside the first six. On a stage where positioning into the final kilometres was always likely to be decisive, that collective strength helped give Tas the platform to finish it off.

Opening stage creates early race gaps

Tas completed the stage in 3:09:42, with the leading group finishing together in Plouay. The early general classification is therefore shaped by the sprint result and bonuses, with Tas moving straight into the race lead ahead of Dideriksen and Hesters.

The top of the result also shows that the day was not simply a full bunch sprint from a completely intact peloton. Nika Bobnar, Kate Richardson, Ilona Rouat, Fiona Mangan, Riedmann, Florencia Monsalvez, Annelies Nijssen, Anneke Dijkstra, Amandine Muller and Sophie Marr were among the riders finishing close behind the front group, while larger gaps opened further down the field.

For a three-day race, those small early differences can still matter. The Bretagne Ladies Tour often rewards riders who can handle repeated changes of rhythm, and the opening day has already given the race a clear leader without fully closing the door on the general classification.

Lotto Intermarché Ladies make the ideal start

For Lotto Intermarché Ladies, this was close to the perfect opening stage. Tas delivered the win, Ebras and Riedmann packed the front of the result, and Nijssen also finished prominently. The team now has the leader’s jersey, stage-winning confidence and several riders clearly comfortable in the front group.

Tas’ victory also continues a strong period in her early road career. After placing third at Omloop der Kempen and ninth at GP Mazda Schelkens earlier this month, this result confirms that her finishing speed is already translating at UCI level. It is one thing to show promise in one-day races, but another to win a stage race opener against riders such as Dideriksen and Hesters.

The next challenge will be defending the jersey. With two stages still to come, the race is far from decided, and teams such as Cofidis, Liv AlUla Jayco, AG Insurance-Soudal and VolkerWessels still have riders close enough to apply pressure. Lotto Intermarché Ladies have the advantage, but Brittany rarely allows a race to stay completely settled for long.
