Team SD Worx-Protime is entering a new phase with the appointment of Gian Paolo Mondini, who brings a wealth of experience to the organisation. General manager Erwin Janssen has highlighted the value Mondini’s diverse background offers, acknowledging his notable career in cycling and his academic achievements in psychology. “With Gian Paolo’s arrival, we gain extensive knowledge in multiple areas. He raced at the highest level, winning a stage in the Tour de France, and later pursued psychology, which is increasingly crucial in cycling as the mental aspect becomes more prominent.”
Mondini’s experience extends beyond racing, having spent significant time at Specialized, where he acquired valuable expertise in equipment and professional team dynamics. His familiarity with the brand is seen as a key asset, with sports manager Danny Stam noting, “Our team has ridden with Specialized for 11 years, and we’ve worked with Gian Paolo throughout that period. With the departure of Anna van der Breggen and Lars Boom from team management, we sought a personality with extensive experience. When the opportunity arose to bring Gian Paolo on board, his enthusiasm was immediate.”
Mondini reflects on this transition from his previous role at Specialized, where he served as a liaison for sponsored teams and riders. “After 14 years, I felt it was time for something new. When Danny Stam approached me, it felt like the right fit.”
A multifaceted role
In his new position, Mondini will draw on his varied background. “Having been a professional cyclist for eight years, I have a unique perspective that helps tactically, allowing me to scout races and offer advice in real-time,” he says. He also brings his expertise in equipment testing from his time at Specialized, which he sees as an advantage for the team. “I can help riders fine-tune their feedback on equipment, which enhances their control on the bike.”
Mondini’s academic training in psychology further enriches his approach. “After retiring, I completed a PhD in psychology, which now helps me support the riders mentally. Cycling is not just about physical strength; mental resilience plays a huge role, and I aim to prepare the team for unexpected scenarios in races.”
New challenges ahead
Despite his extensive background, Mondini acknowledges there will be new experiences to navigate in this role. “I’ve never been in the sport director’s car before, but I am surrounded by knowledgeable colleagues here at Team SD Worx-Protime.”
Looking ahead, Mondini expresses his excitement about the future. “After discussions with Erwin Janssen and Danny Stam, I was convinced this was the right step. This role feels like the culmination of my diverse experiences, and I’m looking forward to this new challenge.”
