Giro d’Italia Women 2025 stage 8 preview – Final showdown on the Imola circuit

Elisa Longo Borghini 2025 Giro Italia Women Stage 7 maglia rosa (La Presse)

The final stage of the 2025 Giro d’Italia Women delivers one last opportunity for the general classification to shift, with a rolling 117.5km route from Forlì to Imola. Elisa Longo Borghini leads the race heading into the last day, but only by 22 seconds over Marlen Reusser, and the gap is small enough for the outcome to still change on the iconic circuit finale.

With three laps of the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari and the Cima Gallisterna climb featuring heavily, there’s room for a late ambush. The same finish played a pivotal role at the 2020 World Championships, where Anna van der Breggen soloed to the rainbow jersey. The climb to Gallisterna might not be long, but it’s steep enough to cause separation – and if Reusser wants the maglia rosa, she’ll need to use it.

The route – a punchy circuit to settle the GC

The stage begins in Forlì, home to the legendary Caterina Sforza, before quickly heading west into hillier terrain. After just over 35km, the riders enter the World Championships circuit used in 2020, passing over the Cima Gallisterna for the first time. From there, it’s onto the Imola motor racing circuit, where the peloton will cross the finish line for the first time.

Three full laps of a 28.2km finishing circuit follow, each containing the climb of Mazzolano (1.8km at 6.3%) and the Cima Gallisterna (2.6km at 6.4%), which has already been used twice in the stage. With repeated climbing, it’s a route built for attacks from strong climbers or puncheurs who still have something left after a brutal week of racing.

What’s on offer

Date: Sunday, 13th July
Distance: 117.5km
Start/Finish: Forlì – Imola
Climbs:

  • Cima Gallisterna (x4)
  • Mazzolano (x3)

Prediction

Elisa Longo Borghini has the experience and the jersey, but we think Marlen Reusser will give everything in a last-ditch effort to overturn the 22-second gap. The repeated efforts on Gallisterna suit her well, and she’s been inching closer with each passing day. Expect the Swiss rider to go on the attack and try to reclaim the maglia rosa. Whether she succeeds or not, it will be a dramatic finale to an open and fiercely contested Giro.
