Australia has unveiled its squad for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, showcasing a blend of seasoned Olympians and promising newcomers across road and track cycling disciplines. The announcement, made today at the Adelaide Super-Drome by Chef de Mission Anna Meares, highlights a mix of experience and fresh talent poised to compete on the international stage.
Leading the charge is road cycling star Grace Brown, a silver medallist at the 2023 World Championships and Liege Bastogne Liege winner. Brown, expressing her excitement, stated, “Tokyo was a special experience for me, but finishing fourth in the individual time trial left me with a desire to go for more. I have big goals in Paris and that is to go after a medal on the first day of competition.” Alongside her in the road race will be Ruby Roseman-Gannon and Lauretta Hanson, forming a cohesive team aiming for top honours.
Michael Matthews, a seasoned campaigner with three Tour de France stage victories to his name, echoed Brown’s sentiment: “It’s truly an honour to represent Australia at the Olympics. It’s been a dream of mine since I knew what the Olympics was.” Matthews, alongside Simon Clarke and Luke Plapp, will headline Australia’s road cycling contingent in the challenging Parisian terrain.
Chef de Mission Anna Meares praised the selected athletes, emphasising their dedication and the competitive nature of cycling: “Making the Australian Olympic Team is never easy, and in this sport, winning and losing can come down to thousandths of a second.”
AusCycling CEO Marne Fechner commended the selected cyclists and support staff, noting, “Being selected to compete in an Olympic Games is one of the pinnacles in our sport and we are incredibly proud of these six road and 13 track athletes.”
The road cycling events will feature iconic Parisian landmarks as backdrops, with the men’s 273km road race set for August 3rd and the women’s 158km road race following on August 4th. With preparations underway and aspirations running high, Australia’s cycling team is poised to deliver compelling performances at the Paris Olympics, continuing their legacy on the global stage.
