Anna Henderson gave a measured response to the dramatic late crash that upended stage 3 of the 2025 Giro d’Italia Women, confirming she had kept the maglia rosa despite hitting the deck just 2.5km from the finish.

The British rider went down in the pile-up that took out much of the peloton on slick roads in Trento, but crucially, the crash occurred inside the final three kilometres. That meant Henderson was awarded the same time as stage winner Lorena Wiebes and retained her overall lead heading into stage 4.

“There was a lot of stress from about 30 or 25 kilometres to go,” Henderson said after the finish. “A lot of teams lined up, then the rain came in and made all the roundabouts super slippery. It was kind of a waiting game for when the crash was actually going to happen, because it was super fast and slippery roads.”

The crash was triggered when Carina Schrempf slid out at a roundabout, gripping lots of rear brake to avoid a cobbled inside line on a roundabout. Henderson had been well-positioned but couldn’t quite avoid the spill.

“You saw the big one on the roundabout, and I thought I saved it, but I didn’t make it,” she explained. “I just slid. It was a bit of a mess, but luckily it was in the last 3km, so we all got the same time.”

Henderson escaped with only light scrapes, and there were no reports of serious injuries across the peloton, despite the scale of the crash. Most teams confirmed over the evening that their riders were fine to continue, a relief given the brutal nature of the incident.

With the GC preserved by the timing rules, Henderson will wear the maglia rosa again on Wednesday’s stage 4, which brings a tougher test in the mountains. After two stage wins and a resilient display in Trento, the Brit continues to grow into her role as race leader.
