Lidl-Trek have secured the signing of Max Walscheid on a three-year contract, tying the German rider to the team until the end of 2028. The move strengthens the squadโs depth in both the sprints and the northern classics, with Walscheid expected to play a central role in leadouts and support for the teamโs established leaders.
At 1.99 metres tall, Walscheid is one of the most imposing figures in the peloton and has built his career around raw power and speed. Now 32, he enters his tenth season at WorldTour level with 13 professional victories behind him, including successes in Europe, China and Malaysia. Lidl-Trek see him as both a reliable part of their sprint train and a rider capable of taking results in his own right when the opportunity presents itself.
Walscheid explained that the decision to sign was straightforward. โI had a great time at Team Jayco-AlUla in the last two years. I was lucky to meet and work with great people and of course to race successfully. Given the chance to ride for Lidl-Trek, one of the absolute top-tier WorldTeams, I didnโt hesitate for a moment. Lidl-Trek is ideally set up for classics and sprints – Iโm ready to help Mads Pedersen and lead out Jonathan Milan, while also seeking my own chances when they arise. And Iโm extremely motivated to give my all at Grand Tours, because we will have so many different ways to succeed.โ
He also praised the teamโs methods, noting the detail that goes into preparation. โI have seen the teamโs scientific approach, whether in sprint train development, the excellent material, or the team behind the team. This no-compromise attitude fits perfectly to my desire to optimise all aspects of my performance, and it brings out the best in everyone. Iโm ready to contribute to writing Lidl-Trekโs winning story.โ
Luca Guercilena, Lidl-Trekโs general manager, believes Walscheid will make an immediate impact. โMax is a strong engine and an experienced rider who can make a real difference in many situations. He brings both power and race intelligence, whether fitting into the sprint train, contributing in the cobbled classics, or reading a race in the hectic finals. Max is highly motivated to help our leaders succeed, and he can also win himself when the chance arises. Weโre very pleased to welcome him to the team.โ
With the arrival of Walscheid, Lidl-Trek continue to expand their sprinting strength around Pedersen and Milan, while also adding a proven classics rider capable of excelling in the toughest one-day races.
