Trofeo Oro in Euro 2026 route confirmed as Montignoso keeps faith with the Fortezza finale

The Trofeo Oro in Euro has confirmed its route for the 14th edition, with the Tuscan one-day race again built around repeated laps in Montignoso and a decisive late double ascent of the Salita della Fortezza.

The UCI 1.1 event takes place on March 8th, with organisers stating that 29 teams are set to line up for 106.8 kilometres of racing on the roads of Versilia.

A circuit race first, then the decisive double lap

Start and finish are once again on Viale IV Novembre in Montignoso, which remains the focal point for the day. Following the official start at 1:30pm local time, the race begins with a flat 13-kilometre circuit repeated five times, a format that keeps the peloton together while teams fight for position and control.

From there, the race shifts into its familiar, more selective shape. The final phase consists of two laps of a 20.9-kilometre circuit featuring the Salita della Fortezza, a 3.5-kilometre climb averaging 6 per cent. The summit comes with 12 kilometres remaining, followed by a technical descent and a flat run back to the line.

Organisers have leaned into the climb’s status as the race’s signature feature, noting that the Fortezza has repeatedly been the point where the winning move is made. Last year, a three-rider selection formed on the ascent before deciding the victory in a sprint at the finish.

What happened in 2025, and why the same riders will be looking at this finish

The 2025 edition underlined why the Trofeo Oro in Euro has become such a reliable test for punchy finishers and late attackers.

Karlijn Swinkels won from a reduced front group after the final Fortezza ascent, outsprinting Puck Pieterse for the victory, with Dominika Wlodarczyk completing the podium. The climb shaped the winning move, but the final kilometres still rewarded the rider who could recover fastest and deliver the sharpest finish after a hard effort.

That same pattern is what makes the 2026 route so readable on paper. The long, flat opening encourages teams to keep their leaders protected and calm, but the double-lap finale demands power on the climb, confidence on the descent, and enough speed left to finish it off on Viale IV Novembre.

A race with a growing UCI profile and a clear identity

First organised as a local event in 2008, Trofeo Oro in Euro gained UCI classification in 2022 and has held 1.1 status since 2023. In recent editions, it has developed a clear identity as a compact, intense Italian one-day race where the Fortezza climb forces selection without turning the day into a pure climbers’ contest.

Elisa Longo Borghini remains the only multiple winner, having taken the race in 2012 and again in 2024, a useful reminder of the type of rider who can thrive when the finale becomes a battle of strength and timing rather than a straightforward bunch sprint.

Six passes through Montignoso for fans

With the race built around repeated circuits, spectators will see the peloton pass along Viale IV Novembre six times before the finish, as the event again leans on its town centre setting and tight lap structure to bring the race close to the public before the finale decides the outcome.
