Vollering sprints to seventh place in Gent-Wevelgem

The women’s race started after the men’s with a hectic opening and many attacks. Hard wind and high speeds caused everyone to fight for a good position in the peloton in case of echelons. Eventually an eleven-rider breakaway made it to the finish where Demi Vollering sprinted to a seventh place.

It was a tough race and the whole team worked hard. Ann-Sophie was part of the first breakaway but they got caught on the Scheperberg, the first of seven climbs. After the second one, the Kemmelberg, Vollering kept setting a high pace in the peloton on the Plugstreets, causing more riders to get dropped at the back. An eleven-rider breakaway with Demi was formed from the reduced peloton. She tried to attack in the final kilometres but the race ended in a sprint right before the chasing group could get back. Karlijn Swinkels finished right behind in the second group.

‘’I wanted to race freely today, no pressure and go for it when I felt like it. I actually felt pretty good after a bad cold last week. But at the end of the race the legs were empty and I missed some speed because I’ve never trainer behind a scooter. You notice that well with such a tailwind at the end of the race. But that means there’s still room for improvement and that feels good. ‘’ – Demi Vollering
