De Kleijn, Rodriguez and Froome suffer collarbone fractures in UAE Tour crashes

Arvid de Kleijn, Carlos Rodriguez and Chris Froome have all suffered broken collarbones, over the course of the last 24 hours, after heavy crashes in the UAE Tour, forcing them out of the race.

The final stage of the UAE Tour saw a chaotic crash early on, with several riders hitting an unprotected median strip in the streets of Abu Dhabi. Among them were Arvid de Kleijn and Chris Froome, both of whom have since been diagnosed with collarbone fractures.

“I have a fracture in my right collarbone,” De Kleijn shared on social media. “Further examinations are needed to determine a recovery plan.”

Niklas Behrens was also forced to abandon after the crash, which left a number of riders on the ground. Footage showed the severity of the incident, with Gijs Van Hoecke, Joshua Tarling, Rainer Kepplinger, and Jack Rootkin-Gray also involved, though some were able to continue.

Froome, a four-time Tour de France winner, was taken to hospital for further examination, where scans confirmed the fracture. His team has yet to provide a timeline for his return.

De Kleijn had not yet managed to contest a sprint victory in 2025, with a seventh place in the AlUla Tour his best result so far. In the UAE Tour, he finished 11th twice and 16th in the bunch sprints but was caught out by positioning and interruptions in the final stages.

Rodriguez forced out after sixth stage crash

Carlos Rodriguez also suffered a broken collarbone after crashing in the sixth stage of the UAE Tour yesterday. The climber finished that stage but was unable to start the final stage today after his hospital scans confirmed the fracture.

The 23-year-old, who finished seventh in last year’s Tour de France and tenth in the Vuelta a España, crashed heavily and had to be taken to hospital for further checks. His team has yet to confirm how long he will be out of action.
