Aniek van Alphen won the 2026 Superprestige Middelkerke with a long solo attack, taking control on the second lap and holding off Inge van der Heijden and Denise Betsema under the floodlights.
The 777TV rider finished in 46:35, 12 seconds ahead of Van der Heijden and 18 ahead of Betsema. Hélène Clauzel took fourth at 31 seconds, while defending Middelkerke winner Amandine Fouquenet finished fifth at 58 seconds.
The result gave Van Alphen her first victory of the 2026-27 cyclocross season and moved her into the Superprestige lead with 29 points, two ahead of Van der Heijden.
How it unfolded
The second Superprestige round was held on a Thursday evening for the first time, with the Noordzeecross moved from its usual later-season slot and raced under artificial light.
The timing, just two days before the women’s European Championships in Zeddam, reduced the field considerably. Lucinda Brand, Marie Schreiber, Sara Casasola, Fem van Empel and Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado were all absent, leaving the riders targeting the Superprestige overall with a clear opportunity.
Clauzel made the fastest start and led onto the off-road sections, with Fouquenet immediately taking over at the front. The French rider ended the first lap with a small advantage over Van Alphen, while Leonie Bentveld, Clauzel and Julie Brouwers remained close behind.
Van der Heijden and Betsema had more work to do. The pair completed the opening lap around 10 seconds behind Fouquenet, but both began moving forward as the race reached its second circuit.
Fouquenet’s mistake gives Van Alphen the opening
The race changed when Fouquenet made a mistake on one of the short, steep climbs after the sand section. She stalled and lost momentum, allowing Van Alphen to move straight past and take control.
Van Alphen did not wait for the group to reform. She immediately increased the pace through the more technical parts of the circuit and opened a small gap.
By the start of lap four she led Van der Heijden, Clauzel and Betsema by around six seconds. Fouquenet and Bentveld were already 19 seconds down, with Brouwers another few seconds further back.
The advantage was never enormous, but that made the solo more demanding rather than less. Van Alphen could not afford to back off because Van der Heijden and Betsema remained close enough to punish any mistake.
Van der Heijden and Betsema keep the pressure on
Van der Heijden emerged as the strongest of the chasers. Racing potentially for the final time in the European champion’s jersey before Saturday’s title defence, she moved away from the French riders and tried to keep Van Alphen within reach.
Betsema joined her during the fourth lap, creating a two-rider chase. With two laps remaining they were still only around 14 seconds behind.
Betsema briefly reduced the deficit to around 10 seconds on lap six, but Van Alphen responded through the more technical second half of the circuit. Instead of allowing the chase to build momentum, she pushed the gap back out and began the final lap with roughly 16 seconds in hand.
That was enough. Van Alphen stayed clear through the final circuit and crossed the line without needing to take unnecessary risks in the closing turns.
Behind her, Van der Heijden took advantage of a late mistake from Betsema to secure second. Betsema completed the all-Dutch podium six seconds later.
First win after a run of near misses
The victory was significant because Van Alphen had already been consistently close without winning this season.
She opened with fourth at Dendermonde, then finished second at Meulebeke and the Nacht van Woerden, third at Heerde and second again in Superprestige Overijse. Middelkerke finally turned that consistency into a victory.
Van Alphen also won the overall Superprestige last season, but did so largely through repeated podium finishes rather than individual round victories. Her only win of that winter came at the Flamanville World Cup.
This time she did not need to wait for others to fade. She made the race herself after Fouquenet’s mistake, built the winning gap through the technical sections and then maintained enough pressure to stop Van der Heijden and Betsema from ever fully closing it.
Van Alphen takes the Superprestige lead
Brand’s absence meant the series lead was available regardless of the race result, but Van Alphen maximised the opportunity by taking the full 15 points.
She now leads Van der Heijden 29 points to 27, with Betsema third on 24 and Fouquenet fourth on 23. The third round takes place in Niel on 11 November.
The immediate question is recovery. The elite women’s European Championship follows in Zeddam less than two days after Middelkerke, and Van Alphen admitted afterwards that she did not yet know how much the long solo effort would cost her.
Whatever happens at the weekend, the Superprestige picture is clearer. Van Alphen arrived in Middelkerke as the defending overall champion without a win this season. She leaves with both the race victory and the series lead.
