Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado wins HG Cross Heerde 2026 with final-lap sand attack

Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado took her first victory of the 2026-27 cyclocross season at HG Cross Heerde, breaking clear on the final lap after a close three-rider fight with Denise Betsema and Manon Bakker.

The Dutch champion made the decisive move in the sand beside the Heerderstrand lake and won in 46:52. Betsema held second at 10 seconds, while Aniek van Alphen completed a strong late recovery to finish third on the same time.

Bakker slipped to fourth at 16 seconds after entering the final lap in the leading trio. Fem van Empel finished fifth at 1:18 in only her second cyclocross race since returning to competition.

How it unfolded

Heerde’s lakeside circuit combined heavy sand with damp grass, woodland and short firmer sections, leaving little room to recover between accelerations. The sand had been the main focus of our HG Cross Heerde women’s preview, and it ultimately decided the race.

World champion Lucinda Brand and European champion Inge van der Heijden were absent, leaving a field headed by Alvarado, Van Empel, Van Alphen, Betsema, Bakker and Leonie Bentveld.

Van Empel made the best start. The 2025 winner reached the first corner at the front and continued to press, but could not immediately separate herself from the other favourites.

A leading group formed during the opening lap, with Hélène Clauzel, Alvarado, Betsema, Bentveld and Bakker all close to Van Empel. Van Alphen then worked her way across, while Julie Brouwers also reached the front during the second lap.

Betsema goes clear as Van Empel loses ground

The race shifted when Van Empel began to lose contact after a bike change and a sequence of technical errors. She had looked sharp through the opening minutes but could no longer follow the strongest riders once the race began to stretch.

Betsema took advantage and attacked alone.

Her margin reached around 12 seconds, forcing the riders behind to chase rather than simply wait for the final lap. Alvarado and Bakker emerged as the strongest pursuers, while Van Alphen found herself several seconds further back.

Betsema began the fourth lap with a useful advantage over Alvarado and Bakker. Van Alphen was around 16 seconds down, with the next group already closer to half a minute behind.

The gap gradually disappeared. Alvarado and Bakker maintained the pressure and, shortly after halfway, finally caught Betsema.

Alvarado tests the group before the bell

Alvarado did not wait long after making contact. She accelerated through the sand and briefly opened a gap, but Bakker responded strongly enough to bring the three riders back together. Betsema survived the acceleration too, so the race entered its final phase with no clear separation among the leading trio.

Behind them, Van Alphen was producing one of the strongest rides of the afternoon. She reduced a deficit that had once left her outside the podium fight and began the final lap only eight seconds behind.

Van Empel was further back in fifth and no longer close enough to influence the victory, leaving Alvarado, Betsema and Bakker to decide the race at the front.

Final sand section decides the race

Alvarado made the decisive acceleration on the sand during the final lap.

This time there was no regrouping. The Dutch champion carried more speed through the difficult section, immediately creating several bike lengths and forcing Betsema and Bakker to chase once they reached firmer ground.

The gap continued to grow. By the closing sections Alvarado no longer needed to take unnecessary risks and could concentrate on keeping the bike upright through the remaining turns.

The more dramatic contest was now behind her. Van Alphen completed her long chase and caught Betsema and Bakker during the final lap. Bakker, who had looked capable of taking second only minutes earlier, could not respond when the positions changed again.

Betsema still had enough left for the finishing straight and narrowly held Van Alphen to secure second. Both were classified 10 seconds behind Alvarado, with Bakker fourth at 16 seconds.

Alvarado converts early-season consistency into a win

The result gives Alvarado her first victory of the new cyclocross season at the third attempt.

She had opened with second behind Brand at Dendermonde before finishing fifth at HG Cross Meulebeke. Heerde turns that solid start into a first win before the major November races begin.

The way she won was encouraging as well. Alvarado had the strength to close Betsema, the patience not to overcommit when her first attack was neutralised, and then the speed through the sand to make the decisive move when the opportunity returned.

Betsema’s second place continued her own strong opening to the winter, while Van Alphen once again showed how difficult she is to remove from a race. Losing contact midway through the contest did not stop her from recovering the gap over the closing laps and reaching the podium.

Van Empel still building after her return

Van Empel’s fifth place needs the context of where she is in her comeback. She returned at Meulebeke after almost a year away from cyclocross and finished fourth. Heerde was only her second start back, and for the opening part of the race she was again capable of matching the front before the mistakes and bike change pushed her away from the leading battle.

She eventually finished 1:18 down, ahead of Bentveld, Brouwers and Clauzel. Mae Cabaca and Sterre Vervloet completed the top 10.

For Alvarado, though, Heerde was about confirming her own form. The decisive attack came exactly where the course demanded it, and once she had clear sand in front of her, nobody was able to follow.
