Enric Mas will not race again in 2025 after being diagnosed with thrombophlebitis in his left leg, a condition that forced his abandonment from the Tour de France and now requires complete rest and recovery.
The Movistar rider withdrew from the Tour during Stage 18 while sitting 18th overall in the general classification. Having been in visible pain on the earlier mountain stages, his final effort to salvage something from the race saw him attempt to join the breakaway over the Col du Glandon. Despite the support of teammate Pablo Castrillo, he was quickly dropped and showed signs of serious discomfort on the descent and early slopes of the Madeleine. Moments later, his Tour was over.
Enric Mas said:
“The pain in my leg prevented me from pedalling when I forced. After the suspected diagnosis, it was right to take me out of the Tour and remedy it as soon as possible. In order to get to the next events in the best conditions.”
A medical bulletin from Movistar confirmed the diagnosis of phlebitis, describing it as causing severe pain and impairing Masโs ability to move the joint normally. The team have since clarified that the condition is likely of post-traumatic origin and will require a period of complete rest, ruling out any racing for the remainder of the season.
It ends another frustrating year for Mas, who had entered the Tour looking to improve on a disappointing 2024 edition that saw him criticised by team management. Although he remained in the top 20 and showed moments of intent, the setback leaves unresolved questions about his future role within the team.
Movistar will now focus on Masโs long-term recovery, with no fixed timeline yet for his return to racing in 2026.
