Kasper Asgreen, the former Tour of Flanders winner, is set to race for EF Education-EasyPost from 2025, as announced by the American team on Wednesday. After spending seven seasons with Soudal-QuickStep, Asgreen is transitioning to bolster the cobbled Classics squad at his new team. The Danish rider brings extensive experience with notable victories in races like De Ronde, E3 Saxo Bank, and Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne over the past four years.
Asgreen, who also claimed a Tour de France stage from a breakaway, feels his racing style aligns well with EF Education-EasyPost’s attacking philosophy. “The main reason for me to come to this team is the way that the guys race,” Asgreen explained in a press release. “Even if the race isn’t perfectly suited to them, the guys won’t just sit in the bunch, waiting for other teams to take charge.”
He added, “On this team, we’re going to do everything we can to make races develop the way we want. For me, itโs the main thing: I like the team’s approach to racing.”
Having risen to the WorldTour level with QuickStep midway through the 2018 season, Asgreen has only known the Belgian squad as an elite cyclist. Jonathan Vaughters, the founder and CEO of EF Pro Cycling, also sees Asgreen as an ideal fit. “Kasper is a smart racer who can make big attacks stick at the ends of the toughest classics,” Vaughters noted. Asgreen’s triumph in Flanders, achieved in a sprint against Mathieu van der Poel, underscores his capability in crucial race moments.
Looking Ahead
Despite recent challenges, with no major wins in 2024 and 2022, Asgreen aims to reclaim top podium spots during his upcoming year with EF Education-EasyPost. “The main goal for the year is to lead the team to victories in the spring in Belgium,” Asgreen stated. He is optimistic about the team’s prospects, saying, “We’re going to have a really strong team with several riders that can mix it up in the finales. That is a recipe that I believe in and one that has worked well for me.”
