Scheldeprijs has firmly taken up the mantle of the World Championships for sprinters that’s inherited from the men’s version of the race. Essentially flat with the highest point comfortably under 50m above sea level, only the weather conditions can provide big race splits. With the forecast set to be fairly benign, we should expect to see the usual sprint finish. We’re getting the big hitters attending this year in Lorena Wiebes, Elisa Balsamo, Charlotte Kool and Chiara Consonni. All 4 finished in the top 4 positions at Gent Wevelgem recently and look set to be a steady march ahead of their rivals. Wiebes is the only winner of the women’s Scheldeprijs with 3 editions in the books and will want to keep that record.
