Lorena Wiebes has been disqualified from the Giro d’Italia Women after commissaires ruled that she used a bicycle that did not comply with UCI regulations on minimum weight.
The Team SD Worx-Protime rider had crossed the line first on stage 1, but the jury communiqué later confirmed her disqualification under article 2.12.007 – 2.2. The ruling stated that Wiebes had used a bike that did not conform to the regulations because it failed to meet minimum weight requirements.
Elisa Balsamo has therefore been awarded the stage victory and will wear the maglia rosa on stage 2.

The official jury communiqué listed Wiebes, race number 167, as disqualified for the “use of a bicycle that does not comply with the regulations” and specified that the issue related to minimum weight requirements.
The communiqué also listed Team SD Worx-Protime sports director Danny Stam, who was given a CHF 500 fine.
It makes for one of the most dramatic openings to the Giro d’Italia Women in recent years. Wiebes appeared to have taken the first maglia rosa of the race, only for the result to change after post-stage equipment checks.
Balsamo inherits stage win and maglia rosa
The decision promotes Elisa Balsamo to stage victory. The Italian will now wear the maglia rosa on stage 2, giving Lidl-Trek the first race lead of this year’s Giro d’Italia Women.
It is a significant swing in the opening classification. Wiebes had looked set to begin the race in the leader’s jersey, but the disqualification removes her from the result entirely and changes the early shape of the race.
For Balsamo, it is a major result on home roads and a strong start to a race where sprint chances are always valuable. The first stage had been one of the clearest opportunities for the fast finishers, and the revised result now gives her both the stage win and the first leader’s jersey.
A costly ruling for SD Worx-Protime
For Team SD Worx-Protime, the consequences are immediate. Wiebes is out of the race, the stage win is gone, and the team also receives a financial penalty through Stam’s fine.
The ruling is particularly severe because minimum bike weight breaches are treated as equipment non-compliance rather than a time penalty issue. Once the commissaires judged the bike not to meet the regulation, Wiebes was removed from the race result.
It is a rare and costly way to lose a Grand Tour stage. Wiebes had been one of the obvious favourites for the sprint opportunities at this year’s Giro d’Italia Women, and her absence changes the dynamic of the fast finishes still to come.
Giro opens with major classification change
The opening day now leaves the race with a very different look from the one seen at the finish line. Balsamo starts stage 2 in pink, Lidl-Trek have early control of the leader’s jersey, and Team SD Worx-Protime are left to reset after losing one of the strongest sprinters in the field.
For the Giro d’Italia Women, it is an unusually technical route into the first classification change of the race. The sporting result on the road was overturned by an equipment regulation, underlining how post-stage checks can have consequences just as decisive as the sprint itself.
