In the latest chapter of his illustrious career, Mark Cavendish was honoured with a knighthood at Windsor Castle, conferred by Prince William. This recognition comes after his remarkable achievement of a 35th Tour de France stage win this summer. The 39-year-old cyclist expressed his pride, saying, “I was really nervous. His Royal Highness was superb. I didn’t honestly know I’d be nervous, but I’m so incredibly proud of representing the country,” as reported by the BBC.
Cavendish spoke about his humble beginnings, remarking, “I’m just a lad from the Isle of Man, to be a Knight Commander, that’s not something I could ever have dreamed of.” The honour is among the highest in the United Kingdom, awarded to those who have made substantial contributions to their field, spanning sports, the arts, public service, and beyond.
The future of a celebrated career
Reflecting on his future, Cavendish indicated that he plans to continue racing to complete his 2024 season. The Tour de France Prudential Criterium in Singapore this November is anticipated to be the final event of his distinguished career. However, it’s uncertain which, if any, UCI-ranked races he might participate in before then. He emphasised his ongoing commitment by stating, “I’ve still got races this year. I’m still training for them, it will be really nice to race as a Knight Commander,” but confirmed he won’t continue his racing career into 2025. “I’ve already said I won’t do another Tour de France,” he reiterated, putting to rest any speculation about a return.
A season of high points
This summer, Cavendish added another victory to his record by winning a sprint stage in Saint Vulbas at the Tour de France, breaking Eddy Merckx’s longstanding record. His achievements in 2024 also include stage wins at the Tour Colombia and Tour de Hongrie, contributing three victories to Astana Qazaqstan’s total of 11 wins for the year.
