The organisers of the Maryland Cycling Classic have confirmed the introduction of a women’s race to accompany the men’s event, with both set to take place on Saturday, 6th September 2025. Terry Hasseltine, President of the Sport & Entertainment Corporation of Maryland, described the addition of the women’s race as a milestone years in the making. “We’re excited to announce the event dates and the addition of a women’s event, which we have been developing plans for since the inception of the project,” he stated. The decision to schedule both races on the same day was also part of a wider ambition to create what organisers have dubbed a “Super Saturday” for cycling fans.
A shared course and a fresh date
The event, previously held on the Sunday of Labour Day weekend in its earlier editions, has been shifted to the first Saturday in September. Both the men’s and women’s races will use parts of the same course, although exact route details are still to be announced. The change, Hasseltine said, is intended to streamline the event and maximise its appeal for both spectators and broadcasters.
John Kelly, the chair of the event, highlighted the unique nature of this format, saying, “Adding the women’s race is a great added component and will continue to help the event grow and diversify. It will be exciting for broadcast and spectator audiences to see a ‘double-header of sorts’ on race day.” Kelly also noted the event’s aim to underline its reputation as a key date on the international racing calendar.
Joanne Kiesanowski, a three-time Olympian and long-time professional cyclist, has been named competition manager for the women’s event. Reflecting on her new role, Kiesanowski said, “It’s exciting to see world-class women’s professional cycling return to the United States, and I’m glad to be part of the team. Our goal is to attract a highly competitive field that showcases some of the best women in the world.”
The women’s race is expected to draw top-tier WorldTour squads alongside strong North American Continental teams, giving fans the chance to witness a mix of international and local talent.
A history of challenges and successes
The Maryland Cycling Classic debuted in 2022, with Sep Vanmarcke taking victory in the inaugural edition. Mattias Skjelmose claimed the 2023 title. However, the event faced setbacks in 2024, when the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge forced organisers to cancel the men’s race. This cancellation raised concerns about the event’s future, which have now been alleviated with its return and the addition of a women’s race.
Organisers had initially discussed including a women’s race in the 2023 edition, citing parity as a priority, but logistical challenges prevented its realisation. With the announcement for 2025, this long-anticipated addition has finally been confirmed.
Leadership updates and future plans
The event’s leadership team has also undergone changes to support the expanded format. Steve Brunner, who has been involved with the race since its inception, has been named executive director. Meanwhile, Jim Birrell will take over as race director, and Bobby Julich, a former Tour de France podium finisher, has been appointed competition manager for the men’s race.
Hasseltine expressed confidence in the team’s ability to deliver a world-class event, noting, “The leadership updates and new additions will help us continue to elevate the Maryland Cycling Classic as a cornerstone of international cycling.”
Further details on both races, including full route maps and participating teams, are expected in the coming months.
