Michael Matthews has extended his contract with Team Jayco AlUla until the end of 2027, confirming that he will continue with the Australian WorldTour squad for at least another two seasons.

The announcement marks another chapter in Matthews’ long association with the GreenEDGE organisation, having ridden for the team during two separate spells. He first joined what was then Orica-GreenEDGE in 2013 before returning in 2021 after periods with Sunweb and Team BikeExchange.

Now 35, Matthews remains one of Australia’s most successful and versatile riders, boasting eight Grand Tour stage wins and a career tally that includes victories at the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia, and in a wide range of one-day races. His palmarès also includes three titles at the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec, a win at Eschborn–Frankfurt, and podiums at Milan–Sanremo and the World Championships.

The 2025 season proved one of the toughest of his career, with Matthews forced out of action mid-year due to a pulmonary embolism diagnosed in June. After several months of recovery, he returned to racing late in the season and is now looking ahead with renewed motivation.

“I’m super happy,” Matthews said in a team statement. “After the problems I had during the summer, it made me appreciate the team, my life, and everything I’ve achieved. I still feel like I’m 25 years old, so I’m excited to continue this journey with Team Jayco AlUla. I really feel like I’m getting better and better, and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can achieve together.”

Team general manager Brent Copeland praised Matthews’ professionalism and influence both on and off the bike. “Michael has proven time and again what he’s capable of in the biggest races. The way he came back from a very difficult period this year shows the type of rider and person he is. He’s an asset to the team, a true professional, and he still has big goals in the sport.”

Since turning professional in 2011, Matthews has built a reputation as one of the peloton’s most consistent performers. His career highlights include Tour de France stage victories in 2016, 2017 and 2022, as well as wins in the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España. He has also worn the green points jersey at the Tour and collected multiple top-five finishes in cycling’s biggest one-day races.

Matthews’ longevity has been matched by his versatility. Over the years, he has developed from a pure sprinter into a classics contender and puncheur, able to win uphill finishes and contribute in hilly stage races. His continued presence in the Jayco AlUla setup offers the team both leadership and experience, as well as a reliable performer for their growing roster.

Having overcome his 2025 health setback, Matthews will aim to return to his best form next season, with the spring classics and the Tour de France again likely to be key goals. For a rider who has already spent more than a decade at the top level, his enthusiasm remains undimmed – and his story with Team Jayco AlUla is far from finished.
