Sara Fiorin triumphs in ZLM Omloop der Kempen Ladies

Sara Fiorin emerged victorious in the ZLM Omloop der Kempen Ladies, leading a dominant performance by the UAE Development Team. Fiorin, the Italian sprinter, won in a tightly contested bunch sprint, with teammate Lara Gillespie securing second place. Marjolein van ’t Geloof finished third.

The race spanned 120 kilometres, starting and finishing in Veldhoven. A key moment came just past the halfway mark at 65 kilometres, where the riders encountered a challenging cobbled section. This stretch featured five cobbled laps in quick succession, but the final 45 kilometres were relatively clear, making a sprint finish likely.

In the opening phase, the peloton remained largely together. Britt de Grave made an early solo attempt to break away but was unable to maintain her lead. The race saw more action as the riders entered the cobbled zone, increasing the pace significantly. Once past the last cobbled stretch, a breakaway group of six riders formed.

This group included De Grave, along with Fien Masure, Julie Sap, Matilde Vitillo, Emma Redaelli, and Anneke Dijkstra. Despite their efforts, they couldn’t create a significant gap and were eventually caught. Dijkstra, however, launched another attack with 25 kilometres remaining, joined by Meike Uiterwijk Winkel and Frederica Venturelli.

This move was also neutralised, as the UAE Development Team organised themselves for the anticipated mass sprint. Their efforts were rewarded when Sara Fiorin crossed the finish line first. Lara Gillespie’s second place added to the team’s success, with Marjolein van ’t Geloof rounding out the podium in third.

After the race, Fiorin shared her excitement, stating, “The team executed our plan perfectly today. I’m delighted with the win and proud to stand on the podium with Lara. It’s a great achievement for our team.”
