Sarah Gigante undergoes successful surgery for iliac artery endofibrosis

Sarah Gigante

AG Insuranceโ€“Soudal rider Sarah Gigante has undergone a successful procedure to address iliac artery endofibrosis according to her team today, a condition that has significantly impacted her performance this year. The Australian cyclist is now beginning her rehabilitation, supported by the Victorian Institute of Sport and her family.

Reflecting on the surgery, Gigante shared her relief at finally understanding the cause of her struggles. โ€œI canโ€™t believe how severe the stenosis was, but Iโ€™m glad to finally have an explanation for the challenges Iโ€™ve faced this year. Iโ€™m taking my rehabilitation seriously and will focus equally on rest and training. Iโ€™ll come back strongerโ€”having two fully functioning legs will make a big difference!โ€

Gigante, who is currently recovering in Australia, took to social media to thank those who have supported her during this challenging time. โ€œI was recently diagnosed with iliac artery endofibrosis and am recovering well post-op. Iโ€™m gutted to miss months of racing (including January, my favourite month!) but happy to know and fix a problem that has been such a mental and physical struggle! Thanks to the VIS and AG Soudal ๐Ÿ™,โ€ she tweeted.

Sarah’s message seems to confirm the expected recovery timescales of around 6 months, which may just about see her able to race the Tour de France Femmes in 2025 in a reduced race calendar.
