Five riders formed the leading group. The peloton, led by Team Jumbo-Visma, controlled the gap of up to five minutes. Giorgia Bariani attacked in the final from the leading group and the peloton had to ride at high speed to catch her. A corner shortly before the finish proved decisive in the bunch sprint. Vos went left in third place and could not pass the later winner, Balsamo and Charlotte Kool.
Vos had mixed feelings about her result. “It was a hectic final. The last corner was 125 metres from the finish, but there were mainly straight roads with narrow sections before that. In a flat stage, many teams want to go for a sprint, so we kept control with Riejanne (Markus). However, the final was so hectic that we couldn’t find each other anymore. I still went through the corner in third place but couldn’t move up anymore. On the other hand, things are going well if you can’t be completely satisfied with third place. Tomorrow we will try again, although it remains to be seen whether it will explode on the little climb.”
“Marianne did well today”, race coach Carmen Small said. “She was on the right wheel, but she picked up too much wind in the last two kilometres. We also missed one or two riders in the lead-out, which was unfortunate. We knew we had to go into the last corner first or second, but Marianne didn’t have the power for it today. Third place is not bad, but we always set the bar higher.”
