Green jersey holder Girmay heads young Intermarché-Wanty 2025 Tour de France squad; stage wins the target

Intermarché-Wanty have named their eight-rider squad for the 2025 Tour de France, backing Biniam Girmay in both the sprints and the battle for green. The Eritrean returns as reigning points classification winner, having taken three stages and the green jersey in 2024, and remains the team’s biggest hope of success amid a season where victories have been scarce.

Despite not yet winning in 2025, Girmay’s consistency has helped keep Intermarché-Wanty afloat in the WorldTour rankings. With relegation concerns looming, the Belgian team are doubling down on their most effective points scorer, alongside a squad designed around aggressive racing and sprint support.

New faces and debutants aiming to make an impact

A strong contingent of young riders features in the lineup. Louis Barré, one of the revelations of the 2025 season, will make his Tour debut. The 25-year-old has notched 15 top-10s this year, including strong rides at Trofeo Laigueglia, Paris-Camembert, Amstel Gold Race, and two stages of the Dauphiné. He is the team’s second-highest scorer this year after Girmay.

Also debuting are 24-year-olds Vito Braet and Roel van Sintmaartensdijk, both part of Girmay’s regular lead-out and development system. Van Sintmaartensdijk is the first rider from the team’s U23 Continental programme to step up to the Tour, having previously won as an under-23 with the team in 2023.

Hugo Page, Laurenz Rex, Jonas Rutsch, and Georg Zimmermann bring experience and attacking options. Page and Rex are returning for a second Tour appearance, with Page having top-10 finishes at Famenne Ardenne Classic and Copenhagen Sprint, while Rex impressed during the spring with strong rides at Brugge-De Panne, Gent-Wevelgem, Paris-Roubaix and Antwerp Port Epic.

Jonas Rutsch, who joined from EF Education-EasyPost over the winter, is set for his third Tour and brings power and depth, having finished sixth at Roubaix. Georg Zimmermann, already a five-time Tour starter, claimed a win at the Giro d’Abruzzo earlier this year and will be another stage-hunting option in the hills.

Performance team focused on execution

Intermarché-Wanty performance manager Aike Visbeek said the team began building this squad as early as last August with the goal of stage wins at the 2025 Tour.

“Biniam Girmay is naturally our spearhead for sprint finishes and stages with tricky finals,” he said. “We’ve strengthened the core around him by integrating Jonas Rutsch into our team, alongside Laurenz Rex and Hugo Page, and by regularly having talents like Vito Braet and Roel van Sintmaartensdijk race with Biniam.”

Visbeek highlighted the significance of Van Sintmaartensdijk’s selection, saying it marks a milestone for the team’s development structure, while noting that Braet is a quiet but powerful force in tougher sprint finishes.

“We also have two other serious contenders for stage wins with Georg Zimmermann, who’s riding his fifth Tour with us, and Louis Barré, the revelation of the first season half. Both are ready to animate the stages.”

Points pressure adds urgency to July mission

Intermarché-Wanty sit 16th in the current UCI team rankings and are just 1,176 points clear of 19th-placed Cofidis, with the bottom two WorldTour teams set for relegation at the end of 2025. The Tour presents their best opportunity to defend their status.

So far this season, Girmay (775 points), Barré (573), and Rex (487) have delivered nearly half of the team’s total. With just two wins across all of 2025, there is pressure for their leaders to deliver again in July. Girmay alone racked up 3,352 points at last year’s Tour – even a scaled-back repeat could be enough to secure Intermarché-Wanty’s WorldTour survival.
