As the second rest day arrives at the 2025 Tour de France, 17 riders have already left the race through crashes, illness and injury. Some of the pelotonโ€™s biggest names are among the list of those who will not make it to Paris, including Remco Evenepoel, Joรฃo Almeida and Filippo Ganna.

The original start list of 184 riders has now dropped to 167, with six stages remaining.

Evenepoel headlines major exits on stage 14

The most dramatic withdrawal so far came on stage 14, when Remco Evenepoel stepped off his bike on the lower slopes of the Col du Tourmalet. The Soudal Quick-Step rider had lost contact early on the stage and showed no signs of recovery. While there was no crash, his team confirmed he was simply unable to continue after suffering in the Pyrenees.

Mattias Skjelmose also left the race that day after hitting a piece of road furniture. The Lidl-Trek rider appeared hurt and was seen riding alongside the medical car before stepping off with around 100km to go.

Steff Cras of TotalEnergies was the third rider to abandon that stage, pulling out early due to illness. Bryan Coquard did not start stage 14 after fracturing a finger in a crash the previous day.

Crashes and illness account for most early exits

Stage 1 was brutal for two GC outsiders, with Filippo Ganna of Ineos Grenadiers and Stefan Bissegger of Decathlon AG2R both abandoning after head injuries. Both were withdrawn under concussion protocol.

Jasper Philipsen, one of the Tourโ€™s top sprinters, crashed at the intermediate sprint on stage 3 and later pulled out with a shoulder injury.

A growing number of withdrawals through illness came in the first week, including Jasper De Buyst and ร‰milien Jeanniรจre before stage 5, and Cees Bol before stage 12.

There were also crashes and crash-related pain that saw the exits of Jack Haig, Mattia Cattaneo, Eddie Dunbar and Georg Zimmermann, while Joรฃo Almeida suffered lingering injuries from a crash on stage 7 and left the race midway through stage 9.
