Trentino is set to host the 2031 UCI Road World Championships, with the official announcement expected on Thursday, 25 September, following a decision made during the UCI Council meeting in Kigali, Rwanda. This will be the third edition of the so-called “Super Worlds,” combining all cycling disciplines – road, track, BMX, and mountain bike – into a single event.

The championships will return to Italy eleven years after the 2020 Worlds in Imola, bringing the rainbow bands back to one of the country’s most cycling-rich regions. Trento is expected to be the centrepiece, hosting the road races, just as it did during the 2021 European Championships, where Ellen van Dijk won the women’s road race and Marlen Reusser triumphed in the time trial. The Val di Sole and Val di Fassa will feature prominently in the mountain bike events, with downhill races staged in the high Alpine terrain, while the track programme will take place at the new velodrome in Spresiano near Treviso. BMX venues are still to be confirmed, with Verona likely to be involved.

The local commitment is substantial, with €30 million earmarked to support the event, underlining the ambition to showcase Trentino’s organisational capacity and natural beauty. The provincial government, represented in Kigali by president Maurizio Fugatti and a delegation including Trentino Marketing leaders, described the bid as “a quality dossier” designed to involve the whole region.

For Trento, already ranked by Il Sole 24 Ore as Italy’s most sporting province, the Worlds offer an opportunity to consolidate that reputation and reinvigorate urban spaces, including the redevelopment of the San Vincenzo area. With Olympic and Paralympic winter events also coming to northern Italy in the years ahead, the 2031 Worlds form part of a wider strategy to project the region onto the global sporting stage.

The announcement will confirm Trentino as the successor to upcoming hosts such as Montréal 2026 and Haute-Savoie 2027, ensuring that Italy remains a recurring landmark in the history of the World Championships.
