European junior champion Azzurra Ballan joins AG Insurance-Soudal for 2027

European junior road champion Azzurra Ballan will join AG Insurance-Soudal for the 2027 season, moving into the Belgian team’s development structure after two years with Breganze Millenium.

The signing comes a day after Ballan won the junior women’s road race at the European Championships in Slovenia. The 18-year-old was part of the four-rider move that decided the title in Šenčur before beating Morgane Lestrade and Klara Dworatzek in the sprint.

AG Insurance-Soudal confirmed the move in their announcement on Monday, adding one of Italy’s most promising young riders to a programme that continues to place development alongside its WorldTour team.

Ballan arrives after a breakthrough junior season

Ballan’s European title was the biggest result of her career so far, but it was not an isolated result. Racing for Breganze Millenium in 2026, she had already shown herself as one of the stronger riders in the Italian junior scene before taking a major step forward late in the season.

At the end of August she won the Trittico Rosa Alta Marca Trevigiana in Valdobbiadene, with Matilde Rossignoli second and the rest of the field more than four minutes down. That result came only days after Ballan had also helped Italy to bronze in the junior women’s team pursuit at the track World Championships.

Her European Championships ride then showed another side of her racing. The 66.3km road race was built around three laps of the Šenčur circuit and three ascents of the steep Možjanca climb. Ballan survived the decisive selection, stayed with the four-rider group that reached the finale and still had enough speed left to win the sprint convincingly.

A natural fit for AG Insurance-Soudal’s development pathway

For Ballan, 2027 will be her first season beyond the junior ranks. AG Insurance-Soudal retain a dedicated U23 structure designed to give young riders time to develop before moving into the WorldTour team, rather than pushing them straight into the highest level before they are ready.

The team have continued to use that route for riders moving up through the programme. Emma Siegers is the latest example, with the Dutch rider stepping into the AG Insurance-Soudal WorldTour squad for 2027 after developing inside the organisation.

Ballan’s mix of road and track experience should suit that approach. She already has the endurance to cope with harder road races, enough speed to finish from a reduced group and experience in team pursuit, giving the team several areas to work with as she makes the jump into under-23 racing.

The Ballan name returns to the professional pathway

Azzurra is the daughter of Alessandro Ballan, the 2008 elite men’s road world champion. That connection has followed her through the junior ranks, but her 2026 season has increasingly given her a racing identity of her own.

The timing of the European title made the comparison difficult to avoid. Eighteen years after Alessandro won the rainbow jersey in Varese, Azzurra put the family name on another major championship jersey by taking European gold in Slovenia.

The next step will be very different. Rather than remaining within the Italian junior calendar, Ballan will enter an international development programme with a direct route towards the Women’s WorldTour. Her first season at under-23 level will be about building the race experience needed for that transition rather than trying to reproduce the European title immediately.

For AG Insurance-Soudal, the signing adds a rider whose strongest result arrived at exactly the right moment. Ballan will start 2027 in the European champion’s jersey and with considerably more attention around her than she carried into this season.
