Alicia Gonzalez confirmed to ride for Lifeplus-Wahoo in 2024

Alicia Gonzalez

Alicia Gonzalez has inked a deal with Lifeplus Wahoo for the upcoming 2024 season, following a six-year stint with Movistar. “It’s time for a new challenge,” Gonzalez expressed, noting her anticipation to contribute her seasoned experience to an already dynamic Lifeplus Wahoo roster that already includes new signings like Heidi Franz. She also underscored her desire for a newfound freedom in her racing style and seizing chances to clinch top results when opportunities present themselves.

Known in cycling circles as a versatile all-rounder, Gonzalez brings more to the table than just her skills in the saddle. Aside from being an astute reader of race strategies, she is also academically accomplished, holding a degree in Biotechnology from Oviedo University. Her well-rounded nature makes her an invaluable asset to any team she joins.

Gonzalez has long been marked for her resilience and aptitude in challenging conditions. Her 2022 season featured a complete cyclo-cross programme, ranging from early-season C2 events in Galicia to high-profile races like the Spanish Nationals in Vic and the Benidorm World Cup. The Spanish elite champion of 2017, Gonzalez demonstrated a significant leap in her performance, particularly in last year’s classics where her teamwork and individual results were notable.

Adding another feather to her cap, Gonzalez etched her name into Movistar Team’s history books in 2018. She became the first woman from the team to secure a UCI podium finish during the Setmana Ciclista Valenciana, coming in an impressive third overall, behind Ashleigh Moolman and Hannah Barnes. This podium finish heralded an excellent first season for her then-teammates at Movistar.

With her shift to Lifeplus Wahoo, Gonzalez is poised to be a galvanising force in the team’s 2024 campaign. Her multifaceted skill set, coupled with a seasoned perspective on race dynamics, ensures that she will continue to be a name to watch in the coming season.
