Ashleigh Moolman Pasio of AG Insurance – Soudal clinched victory in the road race at the African Championships on the 12th of October, 2024. This event unfolded on a demanding 104.4-kilometre route in Kenya, stretching from Eldoret to Iten, a region famed for its high altitude and steep inclines. By crossing the finish line first, Moolman Pasio became the African road champion for the fifth time, underscoring her position as a leading athlete on the continent.
“I’m really happy with today’s result, especially after such a tough season,” remarked Moolman Pasio. “It feels great to finish the year with a solo victory and to win the African Continental Championships. It’s an honour to bring the jersey to Europe and proudly represent the African continent in the European peloton.”
The race proved particularly challenging, with the altitude reaching 2,400 metres, adding an extra layer of difficulty. Despite being closely watched by competitors, Moolman Pasio executed her attack flawlessly and secured a significant lead by the finish line. “Sometimes it’s hard to win these races when you’re heavily marked, but I timed my attack perfectly and crossed the finish line with a significant lead,” she explained.
Moolman Pasio also expressed her admiration for the event’s organisation, praising Kenya’s efforts: “The race was big and very well-organised, and I’m truly impressed with Kenya. It’s also amazing to see the development of young talent, especially the strong under-23 riders coming through in South Africa.”
The experience was overwhelmingly positive for Moolman Pasio, marking a perfect end to what has been a tough season with injuries. Her success serves as a testament to the growth and potential of cycling within the African continent.
