Chris Harper of Australia has pulled out from the Tour de France before Tuesday’s 16th stage. His team, Jayco Alula, announced this development amidst ongoing COVID-19 cases affecting the event.
The team stated, “Harper is suffering from COVID symptoms and following medical advice he will return home to rest and recover properly for the next goals.”
Harperโs exit is the latest among several riders, including Juan Ayuso, a teammate of race leader Tadej Pogacar, as well as Tom Pidcock and Maxim Van Gils, who have also been affected by the virus.
In response to the rise in cases, Tour de France organisers have reinstated protective measures. These include mandatory mask-wearing for anyone who might come into contact with riders and team staff.
