Enric Mas has signed a four-year contract extension with Movistar that will keep him at the Spanish team until the end of the 2029 season. The deal secures Mas’ status as the team’s GC leader for the foreseeable future and sees him commit to what will eventually be a full decade under the management of Eusebio Unzué.

The timing of the renewal is significant. As the Giro d’Italia enters its decisive stages, teams across the peloton are already deep into negotiations with riders and agents for 2026 and beyond. Though transfers cannot be formally announced until 1st August, behind-the-scenes conversations are already shaping the next wave of team structures. Mas’ decision to stay puts Movistar in a stronger position to build around an established figure as other teams begin jostling for talent.

Now 30, Mas has been one of the most consistent Grand Tour riders of the last five seasons. He made the move from QuickStep to Movistar in 2020 and has since become their cornerstone in stage races. His results at the Vuelta a España have been particularly reliable, finishing second overall in 2021 and 2022, and taking third last year.

This season, Mas has already taken two GC podiums – third at the Volta a Catalunya and second at Itzulia Basque Country – showing solid form ahead of a summer that includes both the Tour de France and the Vuelta. He will next race at the Critérium du Dauphiné in June, a typical testing ground before the Tour.

Mas acknowledged the importance of the new contract for his long-term development. “I’m very grateful for the trust placed in me for the next four years, and I’m truly thrilled. It gives me the motivation to continue growing within this team,” he said.

“When this contract ends, I’ll be 34 years old and will have been with the Movistar Team for 10 seasons. Therefore, I want to thank both Eusebio and the Telefónica brand for their trust in me, and I hope to repay that confidence with good results.”

While the Tour remains an ambition, Mas pointed to unfinished business at the Vuelta as a key driver for extending his time at Movistar. “One of my main goals, along with the Tour, will be La Vuelta. I’ve been on the podium several times, and I’d love to achieve a Grand Tour for the Movistar Team.”

With the team unlikely to chase big-money signings in the short term, securing Mas to a long-term deal allows Movistar to anchor their GC ambitions and potentially build a support structure around him across multiple seasons. In an increasingly fluid transfer market, that kind of stability could be just as valuable as a marquee signing.
