How to remove pedals from a bike

cycling pedal shoe pedals

There are generally two different ways to remove pedals from a bicycle, which are using a pedal wrench or an allen key. You can check which method your pedal uses by looking at the inside of the crank where the pedal screws into it. If there is an allen key-shaped hole there, you can use that method. Generally cheaper pedals you will need the wrench and for more expensive pedals the allen key.

Using a pedal wrench to remove pedals

A pedal wrench is a tool specifically designed for removing pedals. It has a thin profile and a long handle that allows you to apply enough torque to loosen the pedal. You will need to use the correct size pedal wrench for your pedals, which is usually 15mm. A regular wrench may be possible but are usually too wide.

To remove pedals with a pedal wrench, you will need to:

  • Shift the chain onto the smallest chainring in the front and the smallest cog in the back
  • Flip the bike upside down or place it in a bike stand
  • Locate the pedal you want to remove and place the pedal wrench on the pedal’s axle
  • Turn the pedal wrench counterclockwise to loosen the pedal
  • Once the pedal is loose, unscrew it by hand and remove it from the crank arm
  • Repeat the process for the other pedal

Using an allen key to remove pedals

Some pedals use an allen key (also known as a hex key) instead of a pedal wrench to remove them. To remove pedals with an allen key, you will need to:

  • Shift the chain onto the smallest chainring in the front and the smallest cog in the back
  • Flip the bike upside down or place it in a bike stand
  • Locate the pedal you want to remove and insert the appropriate size allen key into the bolt on the end of the pedal spindle
  • Turn the allen key counterclockwise to loosen the pedal
  • Once the pedal is loose, unscrew it by hand and remove it from the crank arm
  • Repeat the process for the other pedal

It’s important to note that the left pedal is reverse threaded, so you will need to turn it clockwise to loosen it. The right pedal is standard threaded, so you will need to turn it counterclockwise to loosen it.
