The riders and staff of Human Powered Health™ are gathering in Portugal for the first training camp of the year. During their time in the Algarve, both the men’s and women’s team will be soaking up the sun, and the miles in the beautiful country.
Based in the coastal city of Portimão, the men started training on January 9 while the women arrive on January 16 for a scheduled overlap to allow the whole group time to bond and learn from one another. Both squads will train for 10 days.

Thorne, the team’s Official Personalized Health Solutions Partner, will also be in attendance, speaking to the riders and providing their best-in-class health testing, vitamins and supplements to help fuel the athletes’ performance.
The team’s long-standing relationship with the country of Portugal dates back to its racing accomplishments at the Tour of Alentejo which also coincides with the team’s hiring of lead soigneur and former Portuguese pro cyclist, José Sousa. Sousa played a key role in organizing the training camp alongside performance director Jonas Carney.
“We have a lot of Portuguese staff working for our team,” said Carney. “Along with José, they come with an enormous amount of local knowledge and connections. Sometimes those small details make a big difference and they’ve done an incredible job of helping to organize this camp.”
There are many different performance reasons why the Algarve is a natural fit for the team this year, as well as logistically fitting in with the early schedule.
“We have spent a lot of time training and racing in Portugal over the years. It’s a beautiful country with incredible roads for cycling,” Carney explains. “We will race in the Volta ao Algarve in February, so we are doing reconnaissance of the courses during the camp, and also leaving our vehicles here until Algarve starts.”
