Julie Van de Velde is set to bring her climbing prowess to AG Insurance – Soudal Quick-Step, starting 2024, after her tenure with Fenix-Deceuninck. Known for her impressive 60-kilometre solo ride in the Tour de France Femmes, Van de Velde’s move is a significant addition to her new team, where she’ll primarily focus on climbing.
Van de Velde expressed her excitement about the move, citing AG Insurance – Soudal Quick-Step’s blend of professionalism and a familial environment as key factors in her decision. She also praised the team’s focus on nurturing young talent. “Joining AG Insurance – Soudal Quick-Step felt like a great opportunity. The confidence the team has in my abilities and their commitment to growth, especially among young riders, really resonated with me,” Van de Velde said.
Looking ahead, she aims to leverage her versatility in support of the team’s goals, particularly in challenging climbing races. “My goal is to aid the team in achieving significant results. Embracing the role of a helper in tougher races while also seizing opportunities to break away and compete for stage wins excites me,” she added.
Natascha den Ouden, Team Manager, expressed her anticipation of working with Van de Velde, recognising her as a potential underutilised talent. “We see Julie as a real powerhouse who’s incredibly dedicated to both the race and her teammates. Her coachability and eagerness to learn make her a valuable asset, particularly for the Walloon races and stage races,” den Ouden stated.
