Karlijn Swinkels will miss the Ardennes Classics after being forced to take time out to recover from persistent pain linked to piriformis syndrome. UAE Team ADQ confirmed the news with an update on Instagram, stating that the Dutch rider is prioritising a full recovery over a rushed return to racing.
The 26-year-old has been suffering with “persistent physical complaints while riding”, which were eventually traced to piriformis syndrome—a condition involving a deep-lying muscle beneath the gluteus, known for being particularly difficult to treat. Belgian cyclocross rider Eli Iserbyt, who has faced similar struggles, once referred to the condition as “an enemy in my body”.
“In collaboration with the team’s medical and performance staff, a detailed recovery plan has been put in place,” UAE Team ADQ said in a statement. “This includes adjustments to her bike fit, physiotherapy, and targeted treatments aimed at relieving the symptoms and supporting her recovery.”
Swinkels is expected to return to racing in three to four weeks if her progress continues. “Right now, Karlijn and the team agree that a gradual and cautious approach is the best path forward,” the statement continued. “Her return to the sport won’t be rushed—her long-term health and performance are the priority.”
It’s a frustrating interruption for Swinkels, who had made a strong start to her 2025 season. In Australia, she took 6th at the Surf Coast Classic and finished 2nd at the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, before securing 5th overall at the UAE Tour. Her first win of the season followed in early March, sprinting to victory over Puck Pieterse at the Trofeo Oro in Euro. Her most recent appearances came with 13th at Trofeo Alfredo Binda and 21st at Gent-Wevelgem.
