The only Women’s WorldTour one-day race in the Netherlands this season gets underway today, Sunday 20th April, as the Amstel Gold Race Women returns for its 11th modern edition. With the Ronde van Drenthe missing from the calendar, Amstel now stands alone in flying the Dutch flag at the highest level—and with a route as chaotic, narrow and relentlessly undulating as ever, it’s sure to live up to that billing.
We’ll be bringing you live updates throughout the race, from the long run-in through South Limburg to the decisive laps around Valkenburg, where the riders will tackle the Cauberg, Geulhemmerberg and Bemelerberg in a race that always favours the brave.
The final circuit remains unchanged from previous years, save for the early introduction of the Nijswillerweg climb. The familiar rhythm kicks in around the halfway mark, as the Kruisberg, Eyserbosweg, Fromberg and Keutenberg pile on the fatigue before the peloton hits the local laps. Four ascents of the Cauberg—Limburg’s most iconic climb—will again shape the finale, though it’s the few kilometres that follow that often prove most decisive.

This time last year, Marianne Vos timed her sprint to perfection to snatch victory from Lorena Wiebes, who celebrated a fraction too early. That win made Vos the first rider to take two modern Amstel titles since its 2017 relaunch. Ingvild Gaskjenn, Pfeiffer Georgi and Elisa Longo Borghini all made the top five, but missed out on the top step.
Wiebes returns in 2025 as the rider to beat, having swept through the spring with wins at Sanremo Women, Gent-Wevelgem, Classic Brugge-De Panne and Le Samyn. While the Cauberg traditionally rewards the climbers, Wiebes has shown she can hang on and finish it off in a sprint.
The question today is the same as always at Amstel: who survives the climbs, and who can still deliver at the end?
