British Cycling and the Welsh Government have confirmed a major agreement that will see Wales host the Lloyds National Road Championships from 2025 through to 2027. This announcement strengthens Wales’s ambition to become a premier destination for elite cycling, closely following news that the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift will visit the UK, including Wales, in 2027.
Ceredigion, a county well-known for producing prominent British riders such as Josh Tarling, Stevie Williams, and Gruff Lewis, will host the first edition of the championships from Thursday, June 26th, to Sunday, June 29th, 2025. The event spans three days, starting with the time trial (June 26th), followed by the circuit race (June 27th), and culminating with the road race (June 29th).
While British Cycling’s official release mentions Ceredigion broadly, Aberystwyth is likely to serve as the central hub and base for riders and teams, offering facilities and infrastructure well-suited to the Championships’ demands. Ceredigion is no stranger to hosting major cycling events, having successfully welcomed several Tour of Britain stages and Tour Series events in recent years.
Welsh cycling momentum continues
Jonathan Day, Managing Director for British Cycling Events, celebrated the significance of securing a multi-year commitment:
“Wales has been a huge supporter of hosting major cycling events, so reaching this agreement with the Welsh Government is a huge milestone in securing host venues for the coveted National Road Championships for the next three years. The popularity of this event among riders and fans continues to grow, so it is fantastic to be working with partners in Wales where I am sure it will be a huge success.”
Rebecca Evans, Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, emphasised the Championships’ role in enhancing Wales’s cycling profile:
“This landmark agreement is further excellent news for Wales, particularly Ceredigion this summer, and testament to our unique offering of world-class cycling terrain. With this exciting announcement following confirmation that the Tour de France will come to Wales for the very first time in 2027, it helps cement our position as a premier destination for elite cycling events and offers a chance to see British and Welsh riders who will go on to compete in Le Tour and Tour de France Femmes in 2027.”
Evans further highlighted the opportunity for riders and spectators to discover and enjoy Wales’s scenic cycling routes.
Economic boost and inspiring future champions
Councillor Clive Davies, Cabinet Member for Economy and Regeneration at Ceredigion County Council, underscored the benefits this event will bring to the local community:
“We are delighted that Ceredigion will be hosting the Lloyds National Road Cycling Championships this year. It will be an opportunity for us to showcase Ceredigion as a fantastic place for cyclists and for tourism, where you will experience fantastic scenery—our coastline, the countryside and mountains.”
Davies also emphasised how hosting the Championships could inspire young athletes, leveraging the visibility of local cycling talents:
“Ceredigion has a proud record when it comes to producing elite cyclists, and we hope that hosting this event will inspire young cyclists who will be able to see their heroes in action. Hosting this event will provide significant economic benefits to the County, and we look forward to welcoming the Championships to Ceredigion.”
