Marlen Reusser is facing a challenging period. The Swiss rider has been suffering from post-COVID syndrome, also known as long COVID, for some time, and there’s no end in sight. In an interview with SRF (Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen), an emotional Reusser shared, “I am aware that some people never recover. I am chronically ill at the moment. There are times when it gets better, but there are also times when it gets worse. I do not feel well right now.”
The 33-year-old Reusser is currently unable to function fully, let alone train or compete. Despite this, she remains optimistic and hopes to pin on a number again next year. “It just requires a lot of patience. For now, the focus is on my health. I need to recover completely first and feel healthy again,” she stated.
A Year of Setbacks
Reusser’s troubles began early in 2024, even before her COVID diagnosis, with an upper respiratory tract infection. Things took a turn for the worse after she fell heavily in the Tour of Flanders, breaking her jaw, ear canal, and teeth. This marked the start of a long struggle, which is still ongoing.
The time trial and classics specialist had to miss several major races in recent months, including the Olympics and the Tour de France Femmes. She will also not be participating in the World Championships in Zurich this week.
Adding to her challenges, it is still unclear which team she will ride for in 2025. Her contract with SD Worx-Protime expires soon, and she has attracted interest from Movistar.
