Scarlett Souren of the Netherlands stormed to victory in the opening prologue of the Giro della Toscana, claiming the first pink jersey of the 2024 edition. The 21-year-old from VolkerWessels Womenโs Cycling set a blistering pace over the 2.2km course in Campi Bisenzio, crossing the line at an average speed of 45.792 km/h.
Under the watchful eyes of former pro cyclist Francesco Moser, Souren edged out Belgian rider Marion Norbert Riberolle by just 1.6 seconds. Danish cyclist Christina Bragh Lorenzen completed the podium, finishing 2.23 seconds behind Souren.
Despite the short distance, the course presented challenges with two sharp U-turns, which nearly brought the riders to a halt. Sourenโs victory was all the more impressive given the technical nature of the route.
โIโm really happy with this great start to the Giro,โ said race organiser Brunello Fanini. โEveryone had fun, and thatโs what counts.โ
The prologue saw 129 riders from 23 teams representing around 30 nations. The Italian riders struggled to keep pace, with Niemi Eremita being the best finisher, more than 11 seconds down on Souren.
Tomorrowโs stage will see the riders take on a more challenging route, starting in Quarrata at 1 PM and finishing in Serravalle Pistoiese around 3:30 PM.
