The Italian stage race ended with a flat stage of over ninety kilometres. Although two riders did everything they could to avoid a bunch sprint, everything came together four kilometres from the finish line. Swinkels was well-positioned by her teammates but fell just short in the last few metres to finish it off.
“I am thrilled with today. The ladies executed the plan to perfection”, race coach Carmen Small said. “We wanted to start the lead-out early, as the last kilometres were quite technical. They started at exactly the right moment and positioned Karlijn well. Becoming sixth today is a great result for Karlijn.”
Team Jumbo-Visma can look back on a successful Giro Donne. Marianne Vos gave the team two stage victories earlier this week and the yellow and black brigade also showed its attacking intentions in the mountains. “It was a great week”, Small said. “The riders gave everything and gained a lot of experience. The things we learned over the past few days we can take to the Tour de France, our next goal.”
