Team dsm-firmenich PostNL has taken a bold step towards its sustainability goals, announcing that 90 per cent of its in-race vehicles for coaches have been fully electric since the beginning of 2024. This move is part of a broader effort encouraged by title partners dsm-firmenich and PostNL, with invaluable support from Volvo Car Nederland.
Since 2010, Team dsm-firmenich PostNL has been committed to environmental initiatives, becoming proud ambassadors of Trees for All. Their sustainability efforts extend to various aspects of their operations, including the use of circular mattresses during Grand Tours and hybrid working arrangements for their international team. The teamโs sustainability leader, dsm-firmenich, along with PostNL, aim to positively impact people, climate, and nature.
The journey towards an electric fleet began in 2023. At the Tour de Suisse and Criterium du Dauphine, the team employed Shellโs advanced telemetry devices to gather crucial data on the use of electric Volvo cars in high-performance scenarios. The data confirmed the feasibility and advantages of electric vehicles in professional cycling. This was proven when the first race car completed the 2024 Tour de France solely on electric power.
With the start of the 2024 season, Team dsm-firmenich PostNL’s coaches have been using electric vehicles in races. Consequently, 60 per cent of the teamโs entire car fleet is now electric, featuring Volvoโs high-end EX40 vehicles. Known for their reliability and safety in all weather conditions, these cars have shown that performance and sustainability can coexist seamlessly. The success of this initiative has led to an extended partnership with Volvo, aiming for a fully electrified fleet in the future.
Team dsm-firmenich PostNLโs head of commerce, Jente Rijpstra, stated: โTogether with our key partners we would like to set a new standard in the cycling world, inspiring others to embrace sustainable practices and showcase the future of electric vehicles in sports. Utilising electric vehicles aligns perfectly with our commitment to sustainability and innovation and our goals as a team. Our extended partnership with Volvo allows us to further demonstrate the viability and benefits of electric mobility in the high-stakes world of professional cycling, and further afield.โ
This partnership also benefits from the Shell Recharge app and card, making it easy for team staff to find and use public charging points. The focus on sustainability and innovation is not just limited to transportation. It extends to the food consumed by the team and their overall operational practices, ensuring a comprehensive approach to sustainability.
