The 2023 Vuelta Femenina has announced which teams will be taking part in the Spanish race this year. Moved from its previous spot in September to the beginning of May, the race has also been renamed from the Ceratizit Challenge to the Vuelta Femenina. The race is trying to position itself as the third grand tour of the women’s calendar behind the long-running Giro Donne and the rebooted Tour de France Femmes. Aiming to use some of the prestige from the men’s Vuelta a Espana, it has grown organically from a one-day race to the now week-long race over a number of years.
This make-up of the teams of this year’s race does some reputational damage to the idea that it is the obvious 3rd grand tour, however. 3 Women’s WorldTour teams have chosen not to attend and neither have a raft of the nearly-WWT teams, who are in a battle to earn enough UCI points this season to qualify for the 2024 & 2025 Women’s WorldTour.
Uno-X, Human Powered Health and Fenix-Deceuninck are the WWT teams not attending. Ceratizit-WNT and Lifeplus-Wahoo also turned down their mandatory invitations. Behind them, the GC winners of the recent Setmana Ciclista Valenciana, AG Insurance-Soudal Quick-Step, have also decided not to be involved.
Last year’s race was won by Anniemek van Vleuten, ahead of Elisa Longo Borghini and Demi Vollering.
