Mischa Bredewold powered to a commanding victory at the Dutch national time trial championships on Tuesday, beating defending champion Riejanne Markus to the elite women’s title on the flat roads of Surhuisterveen.
The SD Worx-Protime rider completed the 31.4km course in 40 minutes and 23 seconds, nine seconds quicker than Markus, who was chasing a third consecutive title. Lieke Nooijen of Visma-Lease a Bike rounded out the podium with a strong ride to third, finishing one second faster than fourth-placed Shirin van Anrooij.
The race unfolded across two laps of a 16-kilometre loop around Surhuisterveen. Olympic rowing champion Ymkje Clevering set the early pace, impressing with a time of 41:13 that kept her in the hot seat until Van Anrooij crossed the line fifteen seconds faster.
At the first intermediate time check, Markus was on track to successfully defend her title, setting the quickest split. However, Bredewold built her effort carefully and surged clear at the second time check, going 11 seconds quicker than Markus and putting 13 seconds into Nooijen.
That gap never came down over the final 10 kilometres as Bredewold delivered a perfectly judged ride to take the jersey. “God, you dream of this,” she said afterwards. “I really wanted to be on the podium, so this feels like the cherry on top. The team and Danny Stam gave me so much confidence; I just focused on my own race.”
Markus was gracious in defeat, while Nooijen was delighted to stand on the podium after a long recovery from serious injury. “I’m really happy with this performance,” she said. “The rehab process was long and tough, but this comeback makes me very proud. The conditions weren’t ideal, but I felt good out there and gave it everything I had.”
For Bredewold, the win capped a superb spring that already included victory at the Amstel Gold Race and two stage wins at the Itzulia Women. “It’s a dream,” she added. “When I crossed the line, I thought: how is this real? But that Wilhelmus on the podium showed me this was all true.”
