Wout van Aert will conclude his 2025 campaign without riding the European or World Championships, with his final race set to be the Super 8 Classic in Belgium on September 20. The Belgian confirmed his end-of-season programme will feature the Deutschland Tour from August 20-24, the Bretagne Classic on August 31, and the Canadian GP de Québec and GP de Montréal on September 12 and 14 before returning home for his final appearance of the year.

“It’s important to still set some important goals for the last part of the season, and with this calendar, we’ve certainly succeeded,” Van Aert said. “At the same time, after such a packed season, it’s crucial not to overdo it. That’s why we’ve decided to end my season after the Super 8 Classic and skip both the World Championships and European Championships.”

Van Aert has raced an intense programme in 2025, starting in February at the Clásica Jaén and including a full Spring Classics block, two Grand Tours, and multiple stage victories. This year he made his Giro d’Italia debut, where he took a stage win, before adding another on the final day of the Tour de France. The run marked four consecutive Grand Tours in just 12 months, with stage wins in three of them.

“It’s been a great year, with major goals coming in quick succession,” he said. “As in most years, the spring classics and the Tour de France were my main objectives. I’m also happy that I finally got to experience the Giro d’Italia. That variety – the same reason I rode the Vuelta a España for the first time last year – is something I need and find very motivating.”

Currently ranked fourth in the UCI standings, Van Aert could have been a contender for both road race and time trial medals at the European and World Championships. However, with the hilly Rwanda course potentially less suited to his strengths, his absence will leave Belgium without a key support option for Remco Evenepoel’s rainbow jersey ambitions.
