Dorian Godon made the perfect start to the 2026 Tour de Romandie, winning the 3.2km prologue in Villars-sur-Glâne and taking the first leader’s jersey of the week. The Ineos Grenadiers rider beat Ivo Oliveira and Jakob Söderqvist by six seconds on the short but punchy opener, while pre-race favourite Tadej Pogačar had to settle for sixth, seven seconds down.
The prologue was always set up to create small but meaningful early gaps. At only 3.2km, it was never going to be about pure endurance. Instead, it rewarded precision, explosiveness and the ability to judge a rising finish line effort almost perfectly. That was exactly what Godon delivered.
Godon times his effort perfectly
The route around Villars-sur-Glâne was short enough to tempt riders into going too deep too early, but difficult enough to punish that mistake. The key section came in the final 800 metres, where the road kicked upwards and forced riders to find one last acceleration at the end of an already intense effort. Godon judged it best of all, carrying his speed into the climb and still having enough left to finish strongly over the top.
That was enough to put him six seconds clear of both Oliveira and Söderqvist. The gaps may sound large for such a short test, but the nature of the course made them possible. Once a rider lost momentum on the drag to the line, there was little opportunity to recover it. Godon found the right balance and was rewarded with a clear win rather than a result decided on tiny fractions.
It also continued a strong 2026 for the Frenchman. This was his fourth win of the season and the 20th of his career, as well as his first victory in a time trial since the Boucles de Mayenne prologue in 2019.
Pogačar solid, but not decisive
All eyes were naturally on Pogačar, making both his Tour de Romandie debut and his first time trial appearance of 2026. Starting last, he delivered a clean ride and avoided any drama, but he could not match the best times already on the board. He finished sixth, seven seconds behind Godon, in a performance that was steady rather than dominant.
That result should not be overstated in either direction. On a course this short, one hesitation into a corner or one slight drop in pace on the final rise can cost several places. Still, Romandie opened with a reminder that even the biggest favourite does not simply arrive and win every effort on demand. Godon had set a high benchmark, and Pogačar never quite got onto terms with it.
A short test, but an important first sorting of the race
The prologue did not decide the Tour de Romandie, but it did establish the first shape of the general classification. Godon now carries the leader’s jersey into the road stages, while Oliveira and Söderqvist have already placed themselves well. Pogačar is hardly out of position at only seven seconds down, yet he begins the week needing to recover time rather than defend it.
That is the value of these opening tests. They rarely create decisive gaps on their own, but they do alter the burden of the race. Godon has the jersey and the moment. Pogačar has the stronger reputation and the longer week in front of him. Romandie is now properly under way.
