This year’s Amstel Gold Race has a new spot in the calendar, switching with Paris Roubaix. That’s due to a clash between Paris Roubaix and the French presidential elections on April 10th. Amstel Gold Race’s race director, Leo van Vliet agreed to the change and the quick fix was sorted. The 2022 race should be closer to the traditional route compared to the loop we saw last year. With Covid restrictions lessening, the old route with all of the climbs should be restored. The infamous Cauberg will still have its key role to play before a much-reduced bunch sprint for the finish line.
Amstel Gold Race 2021
2021’s Amstel Gold Race was a bit of an odd one. Due to local Covid restrictions, all spectators were prevented from watching from the roadside. In order to keep to that rule, the race was turned into multiple laps of a much shorter loop than normal. The Cauberg still took centre stage but the repetition meant that there were fewer climbs overall compared to normal.
We saw emotional scenes when Kasia Niewiadoma attacked on the Cauberg and got a gap with Elisa Longo Borghini. Longo Borghini refused to work though and Kasia was desperately imploring her to work with her and secure 1st or 2nd place. As it was, the chasers caught them and we saw Marianne Vos outsprint Demi Vollering and Annemiek van Vleuten for her 2nd Women’s WorldTour victory of the 2021 season.
