Barbieri close to podium spot in stage 3

The last stage on Sardinia was again on for the sprinters. In a chaotic sprint Rachele Barbieri just missed out on the stage podium.

In the third stage in the Giro Donne was the last one on the island Sardinia. The peloton – with Marta Jaskulska in the white jersey as leader in the youth classification – went from Cala Gonone to Olbia over 113,4 km. A group of three riders went on adventure early on in the stage and took 3 minutes advantage. A group of eight riders with Katia Ragusa tried to bridge to the front group. After a long chase only Ragusa and one other rider made the catch at 23 kilometres from the finish.

In the meanwhile the peloton accelerated as well in order to close the gap with the escapees. Ragusa and her companions tried to hold of the bunch, but with 7 kilometres to go all came back together. In a bunch sprint Marianne Vos took the stage win. Rachele Barbieri could do a proper sprint and took a fourth place.
