Davide Cimolai, an experienced Italian sprinter with fifteen years of professional cycling under his belt, is set to join Movistar Team for the 2024 season. The announcement made this Saturday confirms that Cimolai, moving from Team Cofidis, will don the ‘blue’ jersey of Movistar Team starting January 1, 2024.
Cimolai, often referred to as ‘Cimo’, has been particularly noted in recent years for his exceptional guidance to sprinters in his team. He is a skilled rider known for his explosive speed and sprinting ability. Despite his team-oriented focus, Cimolai has nearly a decade of victories to his name, including a stage win at Paris-Nice in 2015, two stages in the Volta a Catalunya in 2016 and 2017, and the overall win at the Vuelta a Castilla y León in 2019.
In his statements, Davide Cimolai expressed both honour and joy at joining a team as prestigious as Movistar. He acknowledged that he had been close to ending his career in 2023 due to mental challenges but decided to continue when the offer from an important team like Movistar came along. Cimolai emphasised his readiness to contribute maximally to the team, particularly in supporting Gaviria, and expressed confidence that with his and the team’s support, they could achieve significant victories. He extended special thanks to Eusebio Unzué, the team’s general manager, for the opportunity.
