Demi Vollering sprints to second place in Emakumeen Nafarroako

Team SD Worx is in Spain at the moment for several races. Today was the first one, the Emakumeen Nafarroako Women’s Elite Classics. This hilly race over 128 kilometres was ridden in rainy conditions. It was Annemiek van Vleuten won the race. Demi Vollering came close to the European champion and became second. Elisa Longo Borghini became third.

For a long time, there was a breakaway group of six riders, with Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio amongst them on behalf of Team SD Worx. Within the final 20 kilometres a few riders could join the six leaders and so the breakaway consists of 20 riders with now two riders of Team SD Worx: Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio and Demi Vollering.

It was Annemiek van Vleuten who attacked on the final climb and passed the finish solo. Demi Vollering was able to get very close in the last few meters but had to settle for a second place after her beautiful victory in Liege-Bastogne-Liege.

“Today was a really hard day, due to the bad weather. We did a pretty good job with the team, we raced attentively and were at the front of the peloton at important moments. The cold and rain were exhausting”, Vollering said after the podium ceremony.
