Elisa Balsamo undergoes successful surgery after severe crash

Elisa Balsamo

Lidl-Trek has confirmed that Elisa Balsamo’s surgery on Tuesday, 21st May, was a complete success. Balsamo, who suffered severe injuries to her nasal bones and left hand, underwent the procedure under the guidance of Professor Federico Biglioli. Biglioli noted that the nasal bones were heavily broken but successfully repaired with swabs. Additionally, Doctor Loris Pegoli fixed the hand injury using a plate and screws.

Balsamo’s condition following the surgery was stable enough for her to be discharged from Casa di Cura La Madonnina in Milan early this afternoon. She has since returned home to begin her recovery process.

The next phase of her recovery will involve a series of medical checks. A first control is scheduled for Friday, followed by a second control on Tuesday to remove the swabs from her nose and examine the surgical wound on her hand. A custom carbon brace will also be fitted to aid her recovery. If these checks yield positive results, Balsamo might be able to resume riding on a home trainer within the next 7-10 days.

In an earlier update on 20th May, it was announced that Balsamo had returned home on Saturday afternoon and was set to be admitted to Casa di Cura La Madonnina the following day. She underwent maxillofacial surgery to reduce the fractures of her nasal bones and septum, as well as an operation to fix the fracture of the second metacarpal of her left hand. The surgical team was led by Professor Biglioli, who had previously operated on Balsamo following an accident in May 2023.

While the exact timeline for her recovery remains uncertain, Lidl-Trek will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
