Giro: Barbieri just missed out on lead group

The sixth stage in the Giro Donne was a tough one with several climbs. Rachele Barbieri surprised herself and just missed out on the decisive lead group.

The Giro Donne peloton went to Bergamo in stage six. The stage was held on a lap of 18 kilometres, which had to be done five times. In every lap there was the San Pantaleone (1,8 km, 5,6%). After the local laps there followed 25 kilometres to Bergamo, where the Citta Alta (1,6 km, 8%) was waiting for the peloton.

Despite several attempts there was no early breakaway. In the meanwhile Liv Racing Xstra worked hard to keep Rachele Barbieri in the front. The Italian rider tried to stay in the front as long as possible. On the final climb she just missed the first group and sprinted to a place just outside the top-10 in the second group.

“Today was a really good day for me! I tried to survive every climb and that worked out well. The last climb was really steep however and I had to let go the better climbers. The team worked hard for me today and was really strong. Despite I didn`t finish in the first group I am happy with my performance today, I surprised myself a bit”, Barbieri said after the stage.
